SPERM STORAGE IN AN EASTERN BLUE-TONGUED SKINK - TILIQUA SCINCOIDES - (HUNTER, 1790). - English
URL: http://www.smuggled.com/easblu1.htm

For the A. arafurae the sperm storage or fertilised egg retention was for 7 years. Furthermore a case at Brookfield Zoo, Chicago, in the United States indicated a possibility of parthenogenesis in specimens of this species (Anonymous, 1989). (Shine et. al. 1995, suggest the above results may be from long term ‘mummification’ of embryos rather than sperm storage or parthenogenesis).

The genus Tiliqua contains several species of large, broad-headed and blue-tongued lizards. The latter feature gives them their common name, blue-tongued skinks. They are widespread throughout Australia, New Guinea, and the eastern islands of Indonesia. Most are sausage-shaped animals with short stubby legs and digits. The claws are quite sharp. The tail is rarely longer than the snout-vent length.
