Glaucomys: New World Flying Squirrels - English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walker/rodentia.sciuridae.glaucomys.html

These flying squirrels are restricted to wooded areas and are primarily nocturnal. For shelter G. volans depends largely on hollow trees and branches or deserted woodpecker holes, but it occasionally constructs a nest among the branches of a tree. G. sabrinus lives in hollow trees during the winter, but in summer it builds an outside nest about 300-400 mm in diameter.

Eastern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans) - English
URL: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/glauvola.htm

These small, nocturnal squirrels inhabit forested areas where suitable trees are present to afford den sites. In the western parts of their range, suitable habitat is restricted largely to areas along rivers and streams. In other parts of their range, they show preference for hammocks where Spanish moss is abundant. In suitable habitat they may be more abundant than most other squirrels. They are sociable and tend to live together in groups.

Effects of southern flying squirrels Glaucomys volans on red-cockaded woodpecker Picoides borealis reproductive success - English
URL: http://www.srs.fs.fed.us/pubs/viewpub.jsp?index=1354

Anecdotal data gathered from many populations suggest that southern flying squirrel (SFS, Glaucomys volans) use of the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker's (RCW, Picoides borealis) nest and roost cavities may negatively affect RCW populations. The authors conducted a controlled experiment to determine the effects of SFS’s on RCW reproductive success. During the 1994 and 1995 breeding seasons, SFS’s were removed from 30 RCW clusters and 32 clusters served as controls.
