El puercoespín no tiene la capacidad de tirar las espinas, es falsa la creencia que el roedor tira o desprende las espinas hacia un atacante, más bien es todo al contrario, las espinas son quitadas del cuerpo del animal cuando un depredador u otra cosa que lo moleste hace contacto con él con suficiente esfuerzo; si es el caso las espinas entran en la piel del molestador y se agarran con los ganchos y estas al ser jaladas del puercoespín quedan incrustadas en el que hizo contacto con el animal.

Prehensile-tailed porcupines live mainly in forests, though sometimes they enter cultivated areas. In Peru they occur in both coastal and Amazonian areas, at elevations of 150-2,500 meters (Grimwood 1969). They are principally nocturnal and arboreal.
