As can be deduced from their names, the sand lance (Ammodytes americanus) and sand dollar (Echinarachnius parma) can be found on sandy substrates. The sand lance buries itself in the sand to hide, while the flat sand dollar slowly edges its way across the bank.

Samples of the lesser sandeel species Ammodytes marinus Raitt were collected from Iceland, Denmark, Scotland, the Faeroe Islands and central and northern North Sea, and analysed for frequency distributions of genotypes of polymorphic enzymes. Main emphasize was laid on the enzymes IDHP, PGI and PGM, which were analysed by standard starch gel electrophoresis with two buffer systems.

The pointy nose of the sand lance (Ammodytes americanus) allows this small fish to dive headfirst into the sand to hide. Humpbacks have developed various feeding techniques to capture this fish, including corralling schools and scraping the bottom to flush them out.

Utbredelse: Fra Portugals kyst nordover til Island og nordvestkysten av Kolahalvøya. Hele Østersjøen. Hos oss er den vanlig langs hele norskekysten nord til Vest-Finnmark. Mindre vanlig øst for Nordkapp. Store mengder i enkelte områder av Nordsjøen.
