After being hunted almost to extinction, collisions with boats and entanglements in fishing gear now threaten the survival of the species. Their coastal habitat is bisected by busy shipping lanes and fishing activity is intense. For northern right whales today, collisions with vessels and entanglements in fishing gear are every-day hazards.
