Gekkonidae - English

Gekkonids form an ancient group of lizards, and include two disparate groups today. The geckos all have four limbs, with 4-5 digits on each limb, while the scaly-foot lizards (formerly in their own family, the Pygopodidae) lack front limbs entirely while the rear limbs are reduced to a pair of flat flap-like stumps. The parietal bones are paired. All gekkonids have vocal sacs and the ability to produce sounds. Most lay eggs, but some species, notably from New Caledonia and New Zealand, give birth to live young.

Predominantly nocturnal. Some genera are diurnal (Gonatodes, Phelsuma, Roptropella, Rhoptropus, Quedenfeldtia). Some genera exhibit the interesting peculiarity of having both diurnal and nocturnal activity (even with some individual species exhibiting both). Examples include: Agamura, Pristurus, Ptyodactylus, Sphaerodactylus and several others.

Israel harbors up to 12 species of Gekkoninae: Of 3 Mediterranean taxa, 2 Occur only in northern Israel; of 6 desert species, 4 are Saharan and inhabit SW Israel; 1 is local in the Levant; and 1 species is endemic to Mt. Hermon. Aspects of their biology are discussed. Additional species in Sinai and Jordan are mentioned.

Bu familyadaki hayvanların çoğu küçük boyda, tırmanıcı gece kertenkeleleridir. Hepsinde 2 çift bacak ve her ayakta da 5’er parmak bulunur. Çoğunda parmaklar yuvarlak ve yüzeye yapışmayı sağlayacak şekilde genişlemiştir. Genellikle kuyruk kolay kopar ve çabuk rejenere olur ancak yeniden oluşan kuyruk, şekil, renk ve pul bakımından eskisinden farklı olur. Göz büyük ve göz bebeği dikeydir. Büyük çoğunda göz kapağı bulunmaz, yılanların gözünde olduğu gibi saydam bir kapsül bulunur.

8-10 cm boylarında göz kapağı olmayan ve göz bebekleri dikey gececi bir kertenkeledir. Parmaklarının uç kısımları geniş yaprak biçimindedir, bu kısmın alt tarafında boyuna bir olukla ayrılmış iki büyük plak bulunur. Tırnak bu oluk içine çekilebilir.
