Also known as mara, Patagonian cavies are found in the dry grasslands of the Argentina foothills, in an area known as Patagonia. Here they live in burrows abandoned by other animals, or small caves and other naturally occurring shelters.

Maras inhabit arid areas with coarse grass or scattered shrubs. They shelter in burrows of their own construction or in the abandoned holes of other animals, such as Lagostomus. They are terrestrial and diurnal. In a study of an introduced colony of D. patagonum in Brittany, Dubost and Genest (1974) found that individuals rested at night in wooded areas and then traveled to open grassland to feed during the day.
