The single species, P. intermedius, occupies most of subarctic Canada, northern Minnesota, and the mountains of the western conterminous United States (Hall 1981). This species occurred across much of the central and eastern United States in the late Pleistocene and inhabited the Great Basin region until at least 5,300 years ago. [ eng ] |

The Heather vole lives in stands of spruce, lodgepole pine, aspen, and grassy meadows in montane forest, subalpine, and alpine tundra (Fitzgerald 1994). The vole usually stays close to water. The Heather vole has been seen traveling 200 yards from its nest. [ eng ] |
