This genus is known only from skulls and fragmentary skeletal material found in owl pellets. It is likely that not all of the above species are valid. McDowell (1958) included Nesophontes in the family Solenodontidae because of similarities in the bones and the outer portions of the molars of Nesophontes and Solenodon and considered both genera closely related to the Soricidae. Yates (1984) followed this arrangement, but Van Valen (1967) maintained the Nesophontidae as a family separate from the Solenodontidae and even placed each in a separate order. [ eng ] |
